USPS eRetire and LiteBlue Retirement: How to Use the Digital Tools Before You Separate
The LiteBlue portal is where most postal employees first interact with the retirement process — and where many make their biggest mistake. eRetire, the retirement planning tool within LiteBlue, handles annuity estimates and counseling scheduling. But LiteBlue access is terminated the day you separate. If you haven't downloaded your critical records before your last day, you won't get another chance.
What eRetire Does
eRetire is an application within the LiteBlue portal available to career postal employees approaching retirement eligibility. It serves three functions:
Annuity estimates. Full-time employees can generate and print a computerized annuity estimate immediately. The system pulls your payroll data, calculates your high-3 average salary, and projects your monthly pension based on your planned separation date. You can run multiple scenarios — different retirement dates, different survivor benefit elections — to see how each variable changes your monthly payment.
Part-time employees and Postal Inspectors can't generate estimates through eRetire. They need manual annuity calculations, which require a formal request to the Human Resources Shared Services Center. The HRSSC mails the estimate within fourteen days of the request.
Counseling scheduling. eRetire lets you schedule a telephonic pre-retirement counseling session with an HRSSC specialist. This session covers survivor benefit options, health insurance continuation under PSHB, life insurance reduction choices for FEGLI, and the general mechanics of the transition. Schedule this at least six months before your planned retirement date — HRSSC session availability tightens during peak retirement periods in December and January.
System notification. When you set a projected separation date in eRetire, it signals the OPM database that you're preparing to transition. This doesn't commit you to anything, but it initiates the back-end processing that eventually leads to your ORA portal invitation.
The eOPF Download — Do This Before Anything Else
Your electronic Official Personnel File on LiteBlue contains your complete service history: every PS Form 50 (Notification of Personnel Action), your service computation date, your pay history, your leave records, and your retirement system designation. This is the source material OPM uses to calculate your annuity.
On your last day of active employment, your LiteBlue access is permanently revoked. There is no grace period, no post-retirement access window, and no way to recover these documents through LiteBlue after separation.
Download and save everything. Specifically:
- All PS Form 50s from your career, especially your initial appointment and any conversion from non-career to career status
- Your current earnings and leave statement
- Your service computation date documentation
- Any military service deposit or civilian service buyback records
- Your most recent annuity estimate from eRetire
Save these as PDFs to a personal device — not a USPS computer, not a work email attachment. Print hard copies of the most critical documents. If OPM later disputes your service computation date or your high-3 calculation, these downloaded records are your only defense.
From eRetire to ORA: The Handoff
eRetire is the starting point, not the application itself. The actual retirement application is submitted through OPM's Online Retirement Application portal — a separate system that became mandatory for all voluntary FERS and CSRS retirements on January 1, 2026.
The transition from eRetire to ORA follows a specific sequence:
- You call HRSSC at 877-477-3273 (Option 5) to formally declare your retirement date and register your personal email address
- HRSSC verifies your basic eligibility and inputs your personal email into the system
- Within three business days, you receive an email from
[email protected]with a secure link to the ORA portal - You log into ORA using a Login.gov account tied to the same personal email address
- The ORA portal displays pre-populated fields — employment history, high-3 salary, sick leave — that you must verify against your downloaded eOPF records
- You upload supporting documents (SF 2818 for FEGLI, marriage certificate, spousal consent forms, DD-214 if applicable) and digitally sign the application
The critical detail: your Login.gov account must be linked to the exact same email address you registered with HRSSC. If there's a mismatch, the ORA portal won't authenticate your account, and you'll need to call HRSSC again to correct it.

What LiteBlue Can't Tell You
eRetire and LiteBlue are strictly transactional tools. They won't help you with:
- Cash flow planning for the interim pay period (60–80% of estimated annuity for an average of 108 days)
- Tax implications of your terminal leave payout
- Whether to keep FEGLI Option B or C into retirement given the age-banded premium increases
- How PSHB and Medicare Part B coordination affects your total healthcare costs
- The strategic value of different survivor benefit election levels
The HRSSC counseling session covers some of these topics at a high level, but counselors are restricted from providing tax planning advice or cash-bridge analysis. They'll explain what options exist, not which option is right for your financial situation.
The USPS Retirement Guide fills that gap — covering the full chronological sequence from the initial eRetire estimate through ORA submission, interim pay survival, and finalization, including the decisions that agency counselors aren't permitted to advise on.
